Russ Evans was born in Alhambra, California in 1953. He lived in the Los Angeles area for 20 years then 2 years in rural New York before moving to Utah where he attended BYU.  He has lived in Utah for 32 years in a variety of rural and city settings where he has restored numerous antique buildings.  It is the contrast of living in such different environments that has influenced his photography and appreciation of life in all its forms.

Russ began his interest in photography while working in the advertising and photography dept of the Los Angeles May Company department stores in 1974, creating ads for the Los Angeles Times.  “The ability to create mood and feeling through black and white and color photography really caught my attention and inspired me”.  His photography has been published in numerous catalogs and magazines since 1979

Russ presently lives in Birch Creek, Utah on his 200 acre ranch where he raises Navajo Churro sheep, mustang horses, mules and donkeys, all of which inspire his interest in photographing aspects of the rural ranch and farm lifestyle.

Evans founded and operated Evans Frontier Stores for over 20 years in the design business in Orem, Utah before acquiring his ranch in 1991. He is well known for his love of and-made antiques from the mid 1800’s bringing thousands of pieces to Utah from the mid-west and east coast. “My photography is a lot like the antiques I have enjoyed over the years. There are simple and subtle textures, details and colors that express the soul of life. I love to look for the soul of something whether it is the past life of a hand- made piece of furniture or the trusting look in the eyes of an animal or the color and grandeur of a high desert cactus plant.”

When asked about how to go about finding and picking just the right shot, Evans says “Still photography is just a moment in the life of everything that happens just before the picture is taken and just after the picture is taken. For me it is rarely the picture I am trying to take that is the keeper. It is the one that happens when I have less to do with it”.

Russ’s work is presently represented by the Spring City Art Gallery in Spring City, Utah.
